# The island's interior: the regions of Mallorca away from the coast

There is the Mallorca of the postcard, and there is the quiet interior, alive all year round. A small map of the areas we call home.

Most people know Mallorca from the coast. The coves, the promenades, the summer. We work elsewhere, in the island's interior, where the villages are still breathing in November. If you are wondering whether the interior suits you, this is an honest first orientation.

The coast lives off the summer. In autumn much of it goes quiet, many houses stand empty half the time. The interior is different. Here there is a baker, a school and a weekly market all year, neighbours who greet you after a while, and evenings when you really hear nothing at all. For some that is too quiet. For others it is exactly the reason to come.

Mallorca is traditionally divided into six comarcas, long-established regions each with its own character: Palma, the Serra de Tramuntana in the northwest, the Raiguer at its foot, the Pla de Mallorca in the centre, the Migjorn in the south and the Llevant in the east. Our home is the interior: the Pla, the Raiguer, the quiet east and the foothills of the mountains.

The flat, agricultural heart of the island, a wide basin between the two mountain ranges. Barely a rise above three hundred metres, but plenty of sky, almond trees and fields. “Pla” simply means plain in Catalan. The old villages are low and real, life turns around the seasons. It is the area that has kept the most of the original island, far from the holiday resorts.

The strip at the foot of the Tramuntana, running parallel to the range. Richer in water than the Pla, known for its wine villages, and Palma is close when you need it. An area for people who want village life without giving up the city entirely.

The Llevant is the quiet east: country estates, paths into the hills, villages without a pose. And where the flat land gives way to the Tramuntana, the liveable side of the mountains begins. Not the postcard side, but natural stone, narrow lanes, pleasantly cool in summer.

The interior is for people who want space rather than bustle, and who prefer something real to a perfect photo. You often get more house and more land here, and a daily life that does not end in October. If that sounds like you, we know these areas well and are glad to go through them with you.
